Formerly known as DFMA (Distributed Framework for Multimedia & Applications), DFmA (Distributed Frameworks & Applications) is the series of annual Franco – Malaysia Conference on Multimedia that has already initiated in 2005 by the University Franche-Comté and the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to provide a forum for researchers in computer science from both countries and to promote interaction with researchers from other regions as well. DFmA is an international conference born from the collaboration between Network Research Group, School of Computer Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia and the Laboratoire d’Informatique de l’Université de Franche-Comté, France. DFmA is technically co-sponsored by IEEE. The first conference was held in Besançon, France in February 2005, and the latest conference (DFmA) was held in Penang on 21-22 October 2008.

A message from UPH Rector Jonathan Parapak was for technology personnel to also pay attention to content as well. “The advanced technology is no doubt something good for human beings, but contents are also no less important since sophisticated technology would be useless if only used for negative things. The impact of the technology itself should be devoted to the welfare of society,” he said in the speech.

Information technology is growing fast each day. Now maybe we are familiar with the term 3G or even 3.5G for the latest one of data transmission process through internet. However, soon we will be dazzled by 4G technology, which has the speed up to 100MB/sec for uploading and 1GB/sec for downloading.

All of this was discussed in the workshop that presented five speakers who are competent in their respective field. Ihan Martoyo from UPH discussed “4G: It Is Not What You Think”, H. Arief Gunawan from Telkom and IEEE with the topic “LTE: The Technology Details”, Hadi Hariyanto from Telkom and IEEE on “WiMAX II: Technology and Challenges”, Denny Setiawan from UI on “4G Policy and Regulatory Challenges”, and Kusuma Lienandjaja from Ericsson Indonesia with the topic “Business Opportunities with 4G.” (UPH/cyn)

Graube beranjak dari standar lama untuk GPIB: IEEE 488. Ia mempertanyakan ketiadaan standar untuk komunikasi pada jarak yang lebih jauh. Maka komite-komite mulai bekerja. Standar pertama yang ditelurkan adalah Ethernet, yang lucunya waktu itu belum didukung Bob Metcalfe sebagai penemu Ethernet . Deretan standar lain untuk komunikasi data kemudian diluncurkan juga.

Dunia wireless menyusul. WiFi dan Bluetooth pun distandarkan sebagai bagian dari 802. Tapi tak semua selesai dengan baik dan cepat. Mengutip Nikolich — yang diangkat menjadi sejarawan komite, WiFi, atau standar Wireless Local Area Network 802.11 disusun dalam kerja keras sekitar 8 tahun sebelum dapat mengeluarkan standar dasar. Yang lebih parah barangkali UWB (ultra wideband) dari kelompok Wireless Personal Area Networks 802.15, yang melibatkan dua kubu yang bersaing — mereka gagal mencapai konsensus dan akhirnya menarik proyek mereka. Contoh lain yang tak pernah mencapai standardisasi adalah Manajemen Network.

IEEE 802 juga merupakan pengarah tren industri. Contohnya adalah standar WiFi Gigabit 802.11AD yang mendorong kalangan industri untuk menyiapkannya mulai mulai tahun 2013 dengan versi 6 GHz dan 60 GHz. Versi 6 GHz akan digunakan untuk aplikasi bisnis dan industri, karena sinyalnya kuat kuat, namun berbiaya lebih tinggi untuk pengkodean, penanganan gangguan, antena MIMO, dan modulasi multilevel. Sebaliknya, versi 60 GHz akan ideal digunakan konsumen dan kantor kecil karena mudah dibangun, namun sinyalnya terganggu oleh penyerapan oksigen — secara harfiah.

Aplikasi skala industri yang didorong oleh standar 802 juga meliputi 802.15 yang mendukung RFID dan smart grid, serta 802.16 yang menjadi standar WiMAX, WiMAX mobile, hingga WiMAX 4G. Yang juga menarik adalah 802.15.6 (Body Area Networks) dan 802.15.7 (Visible Light Communications). Yang pertama dapat digunakan untuk transceiver skala nano yang bisa ditelan pasien dalam bentuk pil; dan yang kedua untuk jaringan data tingkat tinggi dengan modulasi gelombang cahaya sebagai lapisan fisik yang akan beroperasi dalam rentang terahertz tanpa izin dan kebal terhadap gangguan listrik..

Silakan disebarkan demi makin majunya pengembangan sistem komunikasi dan informasi demi kemanusiaan. Selamat Ulang Tahun, Komite Standar IEEE 802!

Bagi institusi yang ingin bekerja sama dalam penyelenggaraan seminar atau konferensi dengan IEEE Indonesia Section dengan IEEE Indonesia Section berikut ini adalah tata caranya. IEEE Indonesia Section dapat ikut mendukung penyebarluasan informasi mengenai seminar atau konferensi dan dengan dengan demikian memanfaatkan jaringan IEEE se-dunia, khususnya dalam mengenalkan nama institusi/ universitas/penyelenggara dan kegiatannya.

Prosedurnya adalah dengan mendaftarkan dalam IEEE Xplore kemudian dengan mengklik Required Documentation dan kemudian langsung mengklik no.4, dan setelah diisi dikirimkan ke IEEE Conference Business Services (ikuti saja petunjuknya setelah diisi).

Sementara yang disebut di butir 3 di bawah ini telah dilakukan, sebagai petunjuk untuk mempersiapkan Conference dg baik. Bila belum, ada baiknya diikuti demi keberhasilan seminar atau konferensi tersebut.

1. buka web IEEE Portal , bila sudah terbuka, klik “Conferences” di sebelah atas, sehingga nampak halaman dengan judul IEEE Conferences and Meetings,

2. Klik “Organize a Conference” di daftar kotak kiri atas, sehingga akan terbuka halam dengan judul atas Conference Organizers [mulai di sini sudah bisa diikuti keterangan-keterangan yang perlu]

3. Klik kemudian satu per satu judul-judul di kotak kiri atas, seperti Conferences Set-up & Approval, Financial Management & Reporting, Technical Program & Publishing dst, yang semua harus dipenuhi;

4. Klik kemudian bagian yang terpenting pada kotak sebelah kanan bawah “IEEE Conference Information Schedule” yang berisi semua form yang harus diisi yang harus disampaikan kepada

Mengenai TECHNICAL_MOU_IEEE Indonesia Section (Word Doc, 132 KB. Februari 2010 version) seperti contoh terlampir setelah diisi dan ditandatangani, bisa dikirimkan kepada ketua IEEE Section untuk ditandatangani.

Moshe Kam provided a presentation on the next roadmap of the IEEE. The IEEE is the result of the merged AIEE and IRE. AIEE was a classical organisation occupied by an electrical engineers; while IRE was the organisation that possessed the young engineers who focused on electronics technology. Both had a growing number of members; but IRE grew much faster than AIEE. The mergers in 1963 to form the IEEE could overcome the problem of dualism. Then the societies, regions, sections, etc were formed. The IEEE is now recognised as the authority holder in various fields of science and engineering. From 20 most referred journals in electrical engineering, 16 is from the IEEE. From 20 most referred journals in telecommunications, 15 is from the IEEE. And so on. But from 20 most referred journals in medical informatics, only 2 is from the IEEE. And from 20 most referred journals in nanoscience, none is from the IEEE. Kam concluded: IEEE could have become the established power as the AIEE before the merger; white the life science develops in the direction that is favoured by young scientists and engineers, just like the IRE before the merger. Then he delivered the BOD mandate: the IEEE must be directed to the relevant technology. IEEE is not just an association of the learned, but an organisation of engineers and professionals.

Related to it, Region 10 launched programmes that lead to increased benefits to members and the community through the development of the organisation, profession, and technologies that are relevant to the present.

From Indonesia, TENCON 2011 organiser,  represented the Committee Chair Dr. Wahidin Wahab, reported the progress of preparation for the Conference, which will be carried out in Bali in November 2011. Vice Chair of the IEEE Indonesia Section, Arief Hamdani Gunawan, also proposed to hold the next Region 10 Annual Meeting in 2011 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Berbeda dengan seminar sebelumnya pada serial ini, seminar di UPH ini dihadiri juga oleh IEEE Indonesia Section Chair, Arnold Ph Djiwatampu. Dari UPH hadir Rektor Jonathan Parapak. Juga diberikan porsi yang lebih besar untuk memperkenalkan program-program IEEE untuk memberikan support dan benefit bagi para mahasiswa dan profesional di bidang engineering.
